Built-in smart albums

When your administrator turns them on, Frameleaf creates six albums for every user and fills them automatically:

  • Travel
  • Documents & Receipts
  • Screenshots
  • Food
  • Pets
  • Nature

They fill up as AI descriptions finish, based on the tags each photo gets and on what smart search sees in it. They’re ordinary albums in every other way: you can open, share and download them.

You can also make your own smart albums from any search, or with New, then Smart album. Those follow a rule you build yourself; see Albums.

If a photo lands in the wrong album, such as a pet on the beach showing up in Travel, remove it from that album as you would from any other. Frameleaf remembers, and no later update puts it back, even when the albums are re-evaluated. Its other albums are unaffected.

Each album has two ways to match a photo, and either is enough:

  • Tag triggers. The photo has one of the album’s trigger tags from its AI description.
  • CLIP queries. The photo looks enough like one of the album’s phrases to smart search. How close it has to be is the album’s threshold.

Smart albums only look at your own photos, and only ever add photos you can already see.

Album Tag triggers CLIP queries
Travel airport, beach, mountain, landmark, hotel, passport, suitcase, tourist vacation travel landscape; tourist destination
Documents & Receipts receipt, document, invoice, paperwork, scan, id-card paper document; receipt or invoice
Screenshots screenshot, ui, screen-capture, user-interface phone or computer screenshot
Food food, meal, dish, restaurant, plate, cooking plated food meal; restaurant dish
Pets pet, dog, cat, puppy, kitten domestic pet animal
Nature nature, forest, mountain, ocean, sunset, wildlife, flower natural landscape; wildlife

Every album starts with a CLIP threshold of 0.28.

Smart albums are off by default. Turn them on in Administration, then Settings, then Categories & smart albums, with Build curated smart albums. The six albums are created for every active user the first time you turn this on.

Turn on smart albums after descriptions are working. The albums fill from description tags, so they stay empty without them. See the setup order.

Each album has its own section:

Setting What it does Default
Enable this album kind Turns this one album on or off On
Album name The name users see Travel, Documents & Receipts, and so on
Tag triggers (one per line) Description tags that add a photo to the album See the table above
CLIP queries (one per line) Phrases matched against each photo with smart search See the table above
Tag threshold The minimum smart search similarity for a CLIP query to match, from 0.2 to 0.4 0.28
Re-evaluate this album Runs the matching again for this album only

Re-evaluate all assets, at the bottom of the page, runs every album. It shows how many described photos will be checked before you confirm. Photos are added to or removed from albums as needed, but photos people took out stay out.

Tag matching ignores capitals, and treats hyphens and spaces the same, so golden-retriever and golden retriever both work.

Good additions for a richer library:

Album Try adding
Travel boarding pass, train station, hostel, market, temple, cathedral, and the cities and landmarks you photograph often, in lowercase
Documents & Receipts prescription, manual, warranty, schedule, ticket-stub, identity-card, license
Screenshots dashboard, browser, app-window, terminal, code
Food Cuisines and dishes you photograph, such as sushi, pizza, ramen, latte-art or bbq
Pets Your pets’ breeds, such as golden-retriever or tabby, and other pets, such as rabbit or guinea-pig
Nature waterfall, glacier, wildflower, autumn-foliage, milky-way, aurora

The threshold applies to CLIP queries; a tag trigger matches whenever the tag is there. Start with 0.28. Lower it to 0.25 if an album looks sparse, or raise it to 0.32 if it’s noisy. The useful range is 0.2 to 0.4.

Each phrase is compared with each photo’s smart search data. A photo joins the album when its similarity to any of the phrases reaches the album’s threshold. CLIP queries work alongside tag triggers, and Frameleaf records which one matched.

CLIP queries need smart search to be on and the machine learning server to be reachable. If it isn’t, tag triggers keep working and CLIP matching is skipped, with a warning in the server log. Phrases are encoded once per model and reused, so re-evaluating is quick, and they’re encoded again automatically if you change the smart search model.

The same settings page has two options for the smart albums people build from a search:

Setting What it does Default
Suggest custom visual categories Lets people preview matches and adjust thresholds before a rule does anything On
Default rule action What a new rule does with its matches. Archiving matches always has to be chosen on purpose. Review

Rules add information without overwriting anyone’s own decisions.

Each album’s Re-evaluate this album only touches that album. Use it after changing one album’s triggers. Different albums can be re-evaluated at the same time, and starting one that’s already running tells you so instead of running it twice.

Re-evaluating only reads descriptions, not photos, so it usually finishes in minutes.

Check, in order:

  1. Smart albums are on, and so is that album.
  2. The photo’s description has finished.
  3. Its tags, in the info panel, include one of the album’s triggers. If you rely on CLIP queries instead, check smart search is on and try a slightly lower threshold.
  4. Nobody took the photo out of that album.

For one photo, remove it from the album. For a pattern, take the offending tag out of the album’s triggers, then Re-evaluate this album.
